Pilgrimage

Religious pilgrimages are rare events when the most sacred elements of human nature and the most profane are on display and open to the public gaze. Pilgrims travel to holy sites with the intention of connecting with the divine—their god or gods. These sacred places also attract vendors who come to sell votives and trinkets to pilgrims, as well as revelers who indulge in the carnival atmosphere of the crowds.

The Pilgrimage series explores the dualities of these two forces, the sacred and the profane, at Catholic and Hindu pilgrimage sites in Mexico, India, and Spain.
