Pilgrimage
The Pilgrimage series was developed during Richards’s research travels in India, where she photographed sacred sites along centuries-old devotional routes. The series explores the interplay of ritual, environment and community, laying the groundwork for her ongoing interest in the intersections of landscape, memory and spiritual practice.
Religious pilgrimages are moments when the most sacred aspects of human devotion coexist with the profane, all visible to the public eye. Pilgrims travel to these sites seeking connection with the divine, while vendors and revellers animate the surroundings with commerce and celebration.
This series captures these dualities—sacred and profane—at Catholic and Hindu pilgrimage sites in Mexico, India and Spain — revealing how devotion, ritual and human experience converge in spaces of extraordinary cultural and spiritual intensity.
